Junior CurlingHeld on alternating Sunday afternoons November through February with awards given for each event at the end of the season. Participants include the older members of the junior program. As with the Little Rocks, all young adults are welcome to join in the fun. Membership is provided as a community function at a very nominal fee with family membership to the club not required. No need to sign up; just come to Session 1 on Sunday, November 8, 2009 or to Session 2 on Sunday, Nuvember 22, 2009. Bring a friend for free for the first 2 sessions. Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: When is it? We have junior curling on 8 Sunday dates this year: Nov. 8th & 22nd, Dec. 6th & 20th, Jan. 3rd, 17th, & 31st and Feb. 14th & 28th. Eachsession runs from 4pm to approximately 6 pm. We start our stretching at 4 so please be 10 minutes early to have your shoes & other stuff ready to go.Q: How young is too young? At Kettle Moraine Curling Club (KMCC) we have full sized curling stones (40 lbs.) and so-called ‘little rocks’ (about 12 lbs). So we have the opportunity to take very young curlers. A bigger consideration is a child’s ability to pay attention and follow instruction on how to deliver a stone. Our experience shows there are few six year olds that are ready, and few nine year olds that aren’t capable (but there are children of all ages that aren’t really interested in curling, and if they’d really rather not be here, they shouldn’t come). Q: What should I wear? Clean tennis shoes with grippy soles. Ice is slippery and we don’t want anyone to fall down. Don’t wear tight pants; it will be difficult to deliver the stone. Wear layers of top garments and dress warmly; it’s pretty cold in the ice house (35 to 40 degrees but no wind inside!). Gloves or mittens make sense; a hat is up to you. Q: What if I can’t make every session? In Juniors at KMCC, we don’t set up fixed teams. We curl with whoever shows up for that particular session. You don’t have to call if you aren’t going to be at a particular session. However, especially for newer curlers, the first few sessions of the year are where we cover the delivery mechanics. It would be best if newer curlers made both of the first two sessions. Q: How much does it cost? If the curler’s parent is a full member of the club this year, there is no charge for the junior curler. If the parent isn’t, then the cost is $40 (plus $14 if the curler is 14 years or older; this added $14 goes to the U.S. Curling Association) for the full season (which is quite a bargain, and that might be increased next year). Make the check out to Kettle Moraine Curling School. Q: What’s the deal with the Pizza? Curling at all levels is both competitive and social. After a match, most often all players from the competing teams will gather around a table in the club room for friendly conversation over a snack or even a full meal. In this tradition, for $2 per curler at each session, we prepare frozen pizza for the kids as they come off the ice at 5:30 to 5:45. It’s optional, if they or you don’t want them to have any it is not required. Sometimes a parent will bring a snack to supplement the pizza (ice cream, cookies, whatever). It’s the talking with your teammates and the other team after the competition that we’re trying to foster. Q: What is the Junior Bonspiel? A curling bonspiel is a tournament where teams play each other to determine a winner. At the KMCC Junior Bonspiel (held in early March) it’s a friendly competition where everybody plays and, while we do keep score, it is a very low-key event. We have had teams join us from Tennessee, Janesville, Green Bay, Madison and also local teams from Milwaukee and Wauwatosa. A distinctive part of the 2 day ‘spiel (Saturday and Sunday) is that all curlers bring a sleeping bag and sleep at the club that night. Start to think about it; the kids seem to really enjoy it and yes, we will be looking for parents to volunteer their help. There is a separate fee for the bonspiel. For more information, contact |
